It is not from the benevolence of the butcher, the brewer, or the baker, that we can expect our dinner, but from their regard to their own interest

When Adam Smith wrote that all our actions stem from self-interest and the world turns because of financial gain he brought to life 'economic man'. Selfish and cynical, economic man has dominated our thinking ever since and his influence has spread from the market to how we shop, work and date. But every night Adam Smith's mother served him his dinner, not out of self-interest but out of love.

Today, our economics focuses on self-interest and excludes all other motivations. It disregards the unpaid work of mothering, caring, cleaning and cooking. It insists that if women are paid less, then that's because their labour is worth less - how could it be otherwise?

Economics has told us a story about how the world works and we have swallowed it, hook, line and sinker. Now it's time to change the story.

In this courageous look at the mess we're in, Katrine Marcal tackles the biggest myth of our time and invites us to kick out economic man once and for all.

Who Cooked Adam Smith Dinner? A Story About Women and Economics edition by Katrine Marcal Politics Social Sciences eBooks

This book is not written for economists, or anyone who has an economics education. It lays out the principles of female labor force participation easily and simplistically; but it only skims the surface layer. If you know your econ, you'll be bored. I was. If you want a deeper dive into the subject matter - not merely an explanation of basic gender economics - look elsewhere.

Who Cooked Adam Smith Dinner? A Story About Women and Economics edition by Katrine Marcal Politics Social Sciences eBooks Reviews

This book is a pretty heavy-handed indictment of the modern view of economics. Rightfully, Marcal criticizes the exclusion of unpaid and caregiving work from economic modeling, and makes a strong case for why the concept of an economic man who is unaffected by the trials and tribulations of the world around him is outmoded at best, and misogynistic at worst.

Marcal's main failing is that she inadequately visions an alternate reality. She employs effective rhetoric in explaining the flaws in the current system, however does little if anything to explain what might change, or how that change might begin. This book is absolutely worth a read (it is very short) whether you not are comfortable with the invisible hand controlling your world.
A bit of a disappointment. She didn't have to repeat the main theme over and over and over.
The most important book writtenThe most important book written in years. An economic perspective that usually does not receive exposure, discussion. Most of us have a mother, but for some reason we never paid attention to her economic contribution. It was the women who rehabilitated the economies after the stupid wars of men. years.
very interesting book!
This book put into context things that had always bothered me. It explains how the current economic model is flawed and has actually created many of the problems we currently face in Western society.
A good read with an interesting perspective.
interesting ideas and information and stats but a bit repetitive. could've written it with a lot less words.
